A very very cute CLOCK...how could I resist

Happy Friday to all.

OK, for the longest time I have been saying, "NO CLOCK in the studio."

I keep reiterating that we don't want to have to be aware of the time, we just want to sew, quilt, visit etc.

No keeping track of how long we've been in the Studio...that kind of thing...

So, in like "forever" there has been no clock....until....NOW!

....drum roll please.... Val (one of the Sugar Shack Sisters (SSS) found this...

Okay, how could I possible resist!  We were up in Revelstoke, BC on route to a quilting retreat when Val found this beauty.   This was most definitely one of those rare  "fab finds."    A must have, and so we now have a clock in the studio.

....the scissors - swing back and forth...oh so cute eh!   It warms my heart when I look at it.

Acme Adjustable Dress Form - my "Amazing Amy"

Back in and around the 1950's (don't quote me on the exact year) the Acme Adjustable Form was very practical in the art of dressmaking for the home sewer.  She had all kinds of body sections that could be adjusted (wing nut and sliding rods).  They came in A & B size, I think.....

I had a old one from around the 1960's period that came from Sears Roebuck, but somehow it got lent to someone for something & it never did return.  As they say, life moves on and you get busy doing other things, and you get new hobbies and the rest is history.

I have been wanting to make some summer dresses for some time now, and with this heat wave we have been experiencing, the need was even greater to have something cool to wear.

I was on the hunt to purchase an old style dress form as this was what I had experience with and was quite fine with the old 'wing nut and bar' style of adjustments on these older style dress forms.

Low and behold upon mentioning this, a sweet friend Janie dug one up.  I mean no disrespect when I say, "dug one up."  But... lets face it, you either have had one, or have one and still use it, or have one and don't use it at all, and it's now stored and/or shoved into the back of a closet to lead a very lonely life.  Well for me, she is no longer lonely!  Yes, she's the kind of women I like, she's all about just wing nuts and sliding bars, yahoo, I am doing the happy dance.

I bartered for her, and am so happy, I call her Amazing Amy - "no" not because of the movie or the books, just because it's an "Acme Adjustable" hence the AA, and the Amazing Amy.  Okay I sometimes give things I own names...maybe it's a possession thing.

So I took to adjusting my Amazing Amy to be as close to my body double as possible. OK, this is no easy task, a few lumps and bumps here and there, and we're good to go!

Obviously as a quilter I always have left over bits and pieces of batting - what a great use for some of them.

She is now adjusted, padded, covered and decorated (neck) with lace and fancy head long arm/hat style pins.

Presenting.... (drum roll please)... " Amazing Amy "

Acme Adjustable Form - original

Covered in left over left over pieces of quilt batting
View from the back

now covered over the batting, needed some tucks/darts
I used pins to create the tucks/darts until I can sew down

I hand sewed down all the darts/tucks during the power outage last weekend.

I added lace around her neck, and then added for decoration only, but very useable large hat pins in red and white. I added for decoration, but they can be used as well.

She is well padded so these pins could also hold heavier fabric on the form when not using traditional sewing pins.

It was all great fun, and my Amazing Amy is a welcome addition to my creative space.

Thanks for stopping by

Debbie

Aiming For Accuracy II- Quilt-Along 2015 with Mishka's Playground (Michele Foster)

Hello to all;

Here's our little update, okay, it's a big update, and we hope you "hop on board" and get started with us on this Quilt-Along adventure!

The Sugar Shack Sisters (SSS) have joined a quilt-a-long, called "Aiming for Accuracy II - Quilt-Along."

It was brought to our attention from a quilter gal pal Lauralyn, who found it on line.  You simply must check it out and sign up.   It's a reasonable cost, and can be a great motivator for something new.

The instructions for the blocks come out on the 7th and 21st of each month, and wow do you learn a lot.  You'll receive your email notice from Michele so you won't miss a thing.  Her direction are so explicate, there is now wondering, "how do I do what", as she explains thing incredibly well.

Check out her web site  http://mishkasplayground.com

She is a wealth of information herself, not to mention all the sites she directs you to, so you can "aim for accuracy," all while creating your blocks for the quilt above.  Knowledge is power and this lady had it going on!  We have learnt a ton of stuff so far, and look forward to more!  Yes we want more!

We'll  post some pictures of our blocks tomorrow, so you can we what our fabric choices are.  We hope to "inspire" you to join!

Hugs from the SSS gang at Maple Garden Quilting Studio.

Maple Tree's ...I can't resist

I just wanted to share some pictures of the Maple Tree's near our studio, that were so beautiful this fall....all changing to their impressive fall oranges, rusts and reds and greens.  The pictures just don't do them justice.

These are just a few of the more than 30 maples on the property....

Dinosaurs...and more dinosaurs

Sorry picture is not as clear as I would have liked.

"Dinosaurs" lap quilt is done!

I was collecting pieces of fabric while on a road tip, on route to a retreat with the girls, when I found this fabric in Penticton, BC (http://quiltparlour.com) and fell in love with the "dinosaurs' on it....

this was just the beginning...

next I purchased some "solid" fabrics at the next store in Summerland, BC (http://www.cherrytreequilts.ca/) and off to the retreat we went.

When I got to the retreat, i just let the fabrics "speak to me," and started to create.

black fabric solid - yes black - it just needed that foundation / separation of color so thank goodness the retreat was in a fabric store! Yup, that's right in Armstrong, BC (http://www.pleasantvalleyquilting.com).

Let me just say that was the BEST, BEST place to have a retreat!!!!  Yes, I am "yelling" BEST BEST BEST - a full line of fabulous fabrics at your disposal.  If you don't have it Klia does!  She was an awesome host!

I got the top finished at the retreat, (along with some UFO's finished). All in all it was a marvelous retreat.
Okay, back on topic, everyone loves dinosaurs, right!  Well, I do!

I wanted to use the main dinosaur print as my main focus, and added to it....so here it is.

I have been teaching myself how to do free motion quilting on my Janome 7700 domestic machine, which can be challenging and requires lots, and lots, and did I say lots of practicing.

Sorry pictures are not the best...now need a new camera.

I tried to create egg pods, waves, and circles (pebbles), okay these do take some practicing, which I will continue to do.

I did a simple, my version of a soft cross hatch type design on the dinosaurs center fabric, and tried a variety of patterns on the various rows...hopefully you can see what i was trying to accomplish.

Hope you like it
Deb
